Experience the history of the Berlin Wall up close on this walk along the former German-German border, between Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery. Start at Checkpoint Charlie, a former major crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Learn about its significance in Berlin's history, before continuing your walk through Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg. With lots of background information and film material, fateful events are recalled and photos of individual locations are used to show the view from then and now. You will learn about major historical events, but also about lesser-known incidents and small secrets. Often it's about escape attempts and secret tunnels. You'll end at the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, now a famous open-air gallery by the Spree River. Admire the wall's graffiti artworks, and learn about their history and meaning. The route is about 6 kilometres long and you should plan on 3 hours to experience everything at your leisure.
