Invalidenfriedhof is no typical graveyard. Today, it might seem like a place for a relaxing stroll along the canal, but look closer and the scars of the past are still visible all around. Once part of one of the deadliest borders in the world – the infamous Berlin Wall – this graveyard holds many untold stories beneath its surface. We will explore the twists and turns of this corner of Berlin and its role in the wars that shaped Germany. Founded in 1748 next to the Invalid House for the wounded in the Prussian Army, Invalidenfriedhof is one of Berlin’s oldest graveyards. It became the resting place for many senior military figures for two centuries. But as we will find out on this tour, the graveyard was not just home to foot soldiers but those fighting in the air too: the legendary Red Baron and one of Germany’s first female pilots, Marga von Etzdorf, both find their resting place here. We will explore the destruction of Invalidenfriedhof in the 1960s when graves were cleared to make space for the Berlin Wall, a section of which still stands there today. We will also visit a former watchtower that now serves as a memorial to Günter Litfin, the first person to be killed by East German border guards as he tried to escape to West Berlin. The tour finishes in a central location in Berlin Mitte, just 10 minutes walking distance from Berlin Central Station.Includes
