Das Berliner Ensemble

Berlin

Theater

The Berliner Ensemble is a Berlin theatre company that was established by the renowned playwright Bertolt Brecht and his wife in 1949.  Since 1954 their permanent home has been the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin Mitte just across the river Spree from the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn station.

The ensemble presents a diverse range play from playwrights including Shakespeare, Chekhov and of course Bertolt Brecht.  Pretty much everything is presented in German so unless you have a pretty good understanding if might be pretty hard going.  That said, if you have an interest in theatre, seeing a classic Brecht play like Fear and Misery of the Third Reich or The Threepenny Opera, at the ensemble that he founded, should be high on your list of things to do in Berlin.
