Theater
This historical building has great cultural significance in Berlin. It was founded in the mid-1990's by Sasha Waltz, together with Jochen Sandig, Dirk Cieslak, and Jo Fabian, all prominent personalities in Germany's theatre world. Since then, Sophiensaele has been putting on a wide range of independent productions for discerning audiences: you'll find dance, music, German-speaking theatre, visual arts, and everything in between.
There are still signs of crumbling wallpaper and cracks in the ceiling that only serve to remind visitors of its turbulent and significant history, although select renovations were carried out in 2011. Each year, watch out for the Tanztage (a Berlin dance festival) and Freischwimmer festivals, both of which seek to support young and developing talent.
