Located in Tiergarten park, just a short walk from the Brandenburger Tor this simple yet powerful memorial honours the Nazi's homosexual victims. Designed by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset the memorial serves to honour the thousands of men and women persecuted and murdered under section 175 of the German Criminal Code which outlawed homosexuality. The third of its kind in Germany, it was erected with the support of the German government with the purpose of honouring the victims, keep alive the memory of the injustice, and create a 'lasting symbol of opposition to enmity, intolerance and exclusion of gay men and lesbians'.
The memorial comprises a single grey concrete cuboid which is reminiscent of the stelae from the nearby Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. This memorial however, also features an additional layer, with the inclusion of a small window through which you can view a film of two men locked in an endless kiss.
The memorial is open 24 hours a day and is wheelchair accessible.
